Water Plant Specimens now Buy 2 Get 1 Free!

Did you know? Tropical water plants such as Canna, Papyrus and Taro make great container specimens! They grow taller than a lot of common annual plants and can really make a statement in a large pot. They don’t need to be in water to thrive as long as they are not subjected to drought. Best of all, the tubers are perennial and can be easily stored over winter in a garage or other cool sheltered space. The plant will come back next year in all its glory once temperatures are reliably above freezing.

Reliable Rebloomers

A question we get asked a lot at the nursery is “What can I plant that will flower all summer?” When planning a garden, it’s important to know that some perennials can rebloom while others will only bloom once. For instance, an Asiatic lily (like most plants from bulbs) will only bloom once a year. There are other perennials that will rebloom, however. These plants will typically flower heavily at first, then go through a “reset” phase once their blooming cycle is over, then regrow and flower again in 1 to 3 weeks. A few perennials can continuously bloom, but most of them do need that rest period.

Rebloomers will keep on producing more color until the first hard frost of the fall. Sometimes the whole plant might look like it’s dying, in which case just cut it to the ground. This is a sign that the plant is consolidating its energy and preparing to send up new growth. You can help perennials to rebloom by pruning off dead flower heads, mulching around their roots, fertilizing and keeping them well-watered. These plants will reward you with a long summer full of color!

Here are some perennials we recommend:

Rozanne Geranium – Geranium ‘Rozanne’

Pinks – Dianthus sp.

Tickseed – Coreopsis sp.

Blanket Flower – Gaillardia aristata

Sage – Salvia nemorosa

Humminbird Mint – Agastache cultivars

Bee Balm – Monarda cultivars

Balloon Flower – Platycodon grandiflora

Garden Phlox – Phlox paniculata

Major Wheeler Honeysuckle – Lonicera sempervirens ‘Major Wheeler’
